Power Up Issues

You wake up, walk over to your computer and push the power button... Nothing, scratch your head hit it again NOTHING, you check to see if it got unplugged , yup its plugged in, still NOT A THING!

It’s now time to pull your computer out from under your desk blow the dust off it and open the side panel to expose the internals.

Making sure the power switch on the power supply is set to ON and there are no red/orange LED lights on it, if your power suppler even comes with LED’s it should be green if it’s not green the power supply is dead.

Then look to see if there are any LED lights on the motherboard (newer mother boards do have them)  if yes then try to turn it on again and see if any fans start spinning and see if anything else starts to light up or beep.

 If no new lights come on or the fans don't spin it can be either your power supply or still yet your mother board.

This test I'm going to show you will determine which one of the two are the culprits.

Push in the tab and wiggle the connector out and don’t worry you won’t break anything,  leave the computer plugged into the wall socket. The connector should look like this, they come in a lot of colors such as red and white, but some commonly black.

Next get a paper clip

And bend it like this so that we may jam it into the 24pin connector  to jump the connections  and what this is doing is over riding the mother board to determine  if it’s the power supply that’s not working or to see if it’s the mother board that is not working.

So now take that bent paper clip and stick it in pin # 4 and 5 as shown

As you can see from the diagram below we are grounding the power to manually turn on the power supply

Now at this point two things have happened:

A:  Absolutely nothing at all has happened,  which means (power supply is dead)

Or

B: The power supply has turned on, and some fan(s) in the case are now spinning, if you have internal lighting it will also be on as well and the power supply fan will be spinning as well, which means (dead mother board).
