Besides the fact that Xeons allow dual socket motherboards, is there anything else that makes a Xeon CPU better than the corresponding non-Xeon CPU? Clearly the Xeon is much pricier, but I can't find any documentation on the web describing what you get for the higher price.

Well xeon is a server platform, server platform uses different ram, they can have more cores, there is a xeon 8 core cpu if I'm not mistaken, depending on the chip, cache can be higher, qpi can be higher, etc.

Xeons are also the only chips that allow you to use multiple CPU's....the actual item that is turned on in the Xeon that makes it different from the i7 980 escapes me but its a bit of logic that allows the multi-cpu application.

Dual QPI link is the only difference, some have said the silicon is binned higher, but I have never seen/witnessed any proof of this.

The Dual QPI is what allows the Dual CPU configuration if I recall correctly.
Never seen any indication that the silicon was binned higher either. |
